Why Newly Qualified Tradespeople Can Be a Great Hire

When recruiting tradespeople, it can be tempting to focus entirely on candidates with several years of experience.

For some roles, that is absolutely necessary. But for others, a newly qualified candidate with the right attitude and practical foundation can be an excellent long-term investment.

Many newly qualified tradespeople have already spent significant time developing practical skills through training, site work, labouring or previous roles within construction.

They may still require some supervision initially, but they can also bring up-to-date training, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn a company's preferred way of working.

For employers, this can create an opportunity to develop someone around their own standards, processes and culture rather than trying to change established habits.

It is important, however, to look beyond the words "newly qualified".

One candidate may be completely new to construction, while another may have years of site experience and has only recently completed the formal qualification required to progress.

That is why understanding the individual candidate matters.

Through Able Talent and our close relationship with Able Skills, we speak with people at different stages of their careers, from those entering the industry to experienced tradespeople looking for their next move.

For the right employer, giving someone their first real opportunity can lead to a highly motivated and loyal member of the team.

Invest in apprentices

It might sound simple, but having a properly structured apprenticeship strategy, one that supports young people from their very first steps right through to employment opportunities, is still an effective way to maintain a workforce.

Construction bosses have a responsibility to ensure apprentices receive genuine and meaningful training and guidance throughout this period. This is essential in improving construction’s image and will help the sector attract a new generation of young people.

Construction's recruitment challenges are unlikely to disappear overnight. While attracting new entrants remains essential, employers who invest in developing existing staff and broaden their recruitment strategies are likely to be better placed to navigate the years ahead.

For more than 20 years, Able Skills has trained thousands of learners across plumbing, electrical, gas, carpentry and other construction trades. As one of the UK's largest private construction training providers, working with individuals, employers and industry partners, Able Skills regularly comments on workforce trends, skills development and vocational training across the construction sector.
